C.S. Lewis once said, “Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you’ll get neither.” Pondering the divine characteristics of heaven, as well as understanding the characteristics that won’t be attributes of God’s kingdom, can help us incorporate heavenly qualities and eliminate non-heavenly attributes in this life. It’s a wonderful thing to know that we can start preparing to live in heaven now by recognizing what heaven’s like, and what it’s not like – and then become proactive in building our homes and lives, families and communities accordingly.
The
Savior and His prophets and apostles gave several glimpses of what His
followers could look forward to when qualifying to live in heaven. One of my
favorites came from Paul’s epistle to the saints in Corinth, found in 1 Cor.
2:9, “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have
entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that
love him” (also see Isa 64:4).
